8/12/2023 0 Comments Front turn signal bulb![]() It could also be a problem with the turn-signal flasher, as the same flasher unit handles both sides. If both turn signals seem to be flashing rapidly, you may have a bulb burned out on both sides. This not only keeps the oil on your hands from touching the glass (which could shorten the life of the new bulb), but also protects your hand if the glass bulb breaks. Also, it’s best not to touch the glass part of the bulb with your bare hands instead, try to grip it with a glove, cloth or paper towel. If you determine the bulb needs to be replaced, check to make sure you get the correct bulb and that it’s inserted properly. If the filament seems good, you might want to do further tests before replacing the bulb. Even if it looks intact, flick the bulb with your finger to see if the filament vibrates, indicating it’s broken. But if you can get the bulb out and it has a glass dome, you may be able to look at the filament - the thin wire inside that glows - to see if it’s intact. If you intend to replace the bulb yourself, note that it’s often harder to do that on newer cars than it was on older ones. If the broken one isn’t obvious, flip the turn-signal lever to turn on the other (i.e., good) side and check to see which lights are flashing. Note that it’s possible there may be more than just the front and rear bulbs (there may be one on the side, for instance). To check which bulb is out, activate the turn signal for the side blinking faster and take a stroll around the car. Change the resistance and it changes the pace. Related: Which New Cars Have Free Maintenance?Ī burned-out bulb makes the turn signals blink faster because it changes the resistance in the electric circuit, and that resistance is what makes the turn-signal flasher unit turn the lights on and off at a given pace. However, there can also be other causes, most of which aren’t quite as simple to determine. Tighten all of the screws or bolts that you had removed previously.A fast-blinking turn signal usually indicates that a turn-signal bulb is burned out on that side. If all seems fine you can replace the plastic cover (if accessed from inside the trunk or under the hood) or the turn signal cover. Turn the car on and test the signal by pressing the brake pedal and by turning on the hazard lights as well as the corresponding turn signal. Before you replace the cover you should always test the bulb. Push the new bulb into the socket and turn it to the right to tighten it, or just press in if the newer style. Take the old bulb to your local auto parts store and have them select the correct bulb for your car. Not all bulbs are created equal and they vary from car model to model. This will remove any rust or debris inside the socket. Use a wire brush and rigorously scrub the area. Any of these things can cause an improper contact which will render the turn signal bulb useless. Look for any signs of corrosion, dirt or general imperfections. Inspect the socket where you took the bulb from. Some later model cars use bulbs that are a press in and pull out by hand. ![]() You then simply have to pull the bulb forward to remove it. Gently grip the bulb with a rag and push it in and turn it to the left. Once you have access to the turn signal bulb it is easy to remove it. Twist the tab or knob on the cover and then remove the cover. If the turn signal bulb is accessed from inside the trunk or under the hood, then you will encounter a plastic cover. ![]() Remove the plastic cover by turning the screws or bolts to the left. And, if it is a front turn signal bulb, the access may be under the hood of the car. If none are visible, then look inside the trunk to find them. Look for either screws or bolts holding the cover in place. Always look at the exterior of the car first to save yourself added work and a headache. There are two ways to access it: through the trunk and through the tail light cover. Getting to the turn signal bulb is usually the most difficult part of this project.
